Just some updates ...

Well, it has been a long time since i have blogged so i figured today would be a good day. The past month and a half have been very eventful around here. Hayden has had 3 hospital stays, we have moved and Andrew is fixing to start at a new school. I guess I will start from oldest to youngest of the children and tell you a little bit about what has been going on ...

Lindsey is doing great in school. Progress reports came out and she has all A's. She is also at the top of her reading group. Last week she had a really bad case of strep throat and was out of school the two days before Thanksgiving so she got a extra couple of days to recover.

Andrew is starting the new Pre-K class at Alto Park Elementary (Lindsey's school) next monday. He is so excited to be going to a big boy school. Last week he was fourtunate enough to catch the flu so he has not been feeling too well but he is getting better. He will have the rest of this week to recover before he has to start school.

Hayden, my handful has had a rough month. We started at the beginning of November in the hospital trying the ketogenic diet to control his seizures. By day two on the diet he stopped eating and drinking. By day three his liver was starting to fail and he was put on an IV. Day four he was changed to the modified Atkins diet and started to eat again but still no drinking. Day five his kidney's shut down and he was pulled off of the diet. Finally on Saturday, Day six he was eating and drinking and his kidney's and liver started working again like normal. The doctors sent us home, stable but no diet and no seizure control.

Last week Hayden started getting sick, stopped eating and drinking again and we ended up back at the doctor. He tested positive for influenza A & B, possible strep throat, and dehydration. The doctor admitted us into the hospital, again. They started him on IV fluids, tested him for strep, and did chest xrays just to make sure he was not developing phenuomia. The strep test came back negative and chest xrays looked good. By Tuesday afternoon he was doing better so they sent us home. Five hours later we were back in the ER because his bladder was swelling. His kidney's had stopped again and he was retaining fluids. After putting a catheter in him and getting out 9 ounces out of his bladder they decided to do chest xrays again because he did not sound too good. Hayden had now developed phenuomia in the 5 hours that we were at home. We were put back in the hospital and started on IV antibiotics. Finally Thanksgiving Day we were well enough and stable enough to come home. He is doing alot better now and hopefully will stay that way until after Christmas.

Now, since you have heard all of the bad news, here is some good news ... We moved into a new house at the beginning of November. It has enough room for the kids to play in and we don't have to deal with my nasty step-father-in-law anymore!!! Also Hayden's SSI (Social Security Disability) was approved!!! He will now start recieving a check every month which will help out greatly with all of the bills and his prescriptions. Hopefully our bad luck is starting to turn around and maybe we will have a good Christmas.

A death in the family

Some horrible person ran over my kitty "Watto" last night. My husband Chris found him when he was pulling out of the driveway to go to work this morning. He had been in the family since 1998 when he was only 3 weeks old. We nursed him and taught him how to use the litter box. He was my first baby. Watto loved to give people kisses and was a very loving cat, even to the kids. I can't believe anyone could run over an animal like that and then just leave them laying in the road. Some people in this world are just horrible.

Update on Hayden ...

Finally, fall break is over and Lindsey and Andrew went back to school today. I figured that today would be a good day because Hayden and I could rest and finally there was some peace and quiet around the house. Unfortunately there has not been peace and quiet because Hayden has been screaming most of the morning. Since Friday he has not been doing to well. He is having 100+ "head drop" seizures per day and they are wearing him out. While grocery shopping Friday night he could not even hold his head up. I had to try and hold him up while also putting groceries in the buggy. Saturday and Sunday he slept alot. While he was up he could not even stand up straight or walk without falling. This morning he woke up in a bad mood, screaming about every little thing, and continues to do this. It is his 2Nd Birthday today so this evening we will celebrate with cake and a present.

I am anxious to find out if Hayden is going to have surgery or not. We have gone through all of the pre-certification and are now waiting on the neurosurgeon's conference which will be held on Wednesday October 10Th. The surgery that we would be having is a corpus colostomy, which is a "split brain" surgery. They would cut the two hemispheres in half to basically disconnect them from each other. This would stop the seizures from spreading from one side of the brain to the other. Surgery is really scary, especially when it involves the brain but we have simply run out of options. We have been on 7 different medicines in the past 6 months. The only 3 that worked to actually slow down or stop our seizures we had severe allergic reactions to. The other 4 medicines we have tried, we are actually still on and at the highest dosages of most of them. Hayden is backwards in alot of ways, especially with his meds. When they increase the dose your seizures are supposed to decrease, but with us the seizures increase. Hopefully we will hear from the neuro very soon as I can't take much more of this. It's really hard to watch Hayden has numerous seizures everyday and not be able to do anything about it.

Paitence

Life sometimes gives you more than you can handle all at once, but that is NO reason to get down and out....throw a hug to a person and you would be surprised how much it can help both of you. So many gripe about simple things, I have tried to be as honest as I could to prove to people that you CAN get through the worst and still continue on with life AND have a positive attitude!
The past year has been really long and full of ups and downs. At some points I have just wanted to say "forget about it", "i am done", "i just need a break", but with the jobs of being a wife and mother you sometimes don't get a break. Sometimes you have to just grin and bear it. It is really hard sometimes but we will make it through. We might be broke, Hayden may be sick and I might not have alot of patience all of the time but we love each other and I know that the LORD will get us through all of this. He would never give us anything that he did not know we could handle. So, I just try and keep the faith. Hayden will get better, we will make it through with the money that we have, and GOD will give me enough patience to make it through.
